How to check your car battery's health

When it comes to car maintenance, the condition of your battery is often one of the most overlooked checks. A healthy battery is vital for peace of mind, ensuring your car starts reliably and doesn’t leave you stranded. By keeping your battery in good shape, you can enjoy trouble-free engine starts, consistent power to electrical systems, protection for key components, better fuel efficiency, and a reduced risk of breakdowns. Here at A1 German Car Specialists, we can check your vehicle for battery issues with our workshop battery testing equipment. However, you can also run some checks at home: First, check for any fluid coming out from a battery. Any fluid coming from the battery could be acid leaking out of it, which requires immediate attention from a skilled mechanic, as it can cause serious damage to surrounding components and is harmful to the skin. Whilst you are doing that, look for any corrosion or white or grey deposits around the battery terminal. Corrosion can prevent proper contact with the battery’s electrical connectors and should be cleaned off. This will require a specialist cleaning formula. An experienced mechanic will know what to do. If you have a multimeter, you can use this to check the voltage, current, and resistance. If you do not have one, you can bring your vehicle to use here in Stevenage for us to check. If the values drop too low, then the battery may need charging or replacing. However, sometimes electrical issues may stem from faulty alternators or other electrical issues.
