MOT Testing FAQ

General questions related to MOT Testing. We undertake MOT testing here at A1. If your vehicle requires a test in the next few months, please book online with us.

What happens if my car fails its MOT check?

If a vehicle fails its MOT, it does not meet the legal requirements and must be repaired to comply with MOT testing standards. The MOT report will include notes on the failure, along with advisory items that may need attention but are not yet outside the parameters required to pass the test.

Please note that A1 may not be able to carry out the necessary repair work for your vehicle to pass its MOT. We recommend checking when booking by giving us a call.

What is an MOT?

If your vehicle is three years or older, you are required by law to have an annual safety check, the Ministry of Transport test, commonly known as the MOT Test. The MOT scheme is a road safety measure designed to ensure that all cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles are adequately maintained. If the vehicle fails to meet the required standard, a VT30 'failure' document is issued, and you have up to 5 working days to have any repairs carried out. Items that are not quite a failure but worthy of a mention to you so you can keep an eye on them are drawn to your attention as 'advisory' items.

What is checked on an MOT?

Under the VOSA requirements, an MOT test will check the following components: vehicle identification number (VIN), registration plate, lights, steering, suspension, wipers and washer system, windscreen, horn, seatbelts, seats, fuel system, emissions, bodywork, doors, mirrors, wheels, tyres and brakes.

How do I book an MOT?

You can book an MOT up to 28 days before its due date. It is not widely known that the expiry date on your new MOT is 12 months from the expiry of your old one. This means you could have an MOT that lasts 13 months. To book your MOT with us, either fill out our online form, or give us a call and we can arrange a time and a date to suit you.

What should I do if the car fails its MOT?

If the vehicle fails its MOT, it does not meet legal requirements and must be repaired to comply with MOT Test standards. If the car has failed the MOT and is left at A1BN for repair and a re-test, then the re-test is free of charge.
